Bandcamp Fridays: A Vital Moment for Independent Music — And for Kosovo’s Scene

Since its inception in 2020, Bandcamp Fridays has become one of the most significant annual traditions in the independent music world. What began as a response to global lockdowns has evolved into a powerful mechanism that gives music creators agency over their work and income — and in 2026 the initiative is expanding, offering eight fee-free days for artists and labels around the world. On each Bandcamp Friday — including the dates scheduled for February 6, March 6, May 1, August 7, September 4, October 2, November 6, and December 4, 2026 — Bandcamp waives all revenue share typically taken on sales. That means 100 % of the sale price goes directly to the artist or label, a rare exception in an industry where streaming royalties often fall far short of sustainable earnings. Over the years, Bandcamp Fridays have generated well over $150 million directly for independent musicians and labels, and they continue to be a clear reminder of the power fans have when they choose to su...

Bandcamp Bans AI-Generated Music: “Human Creativity Comes First”

Bandcamp has officially banned the publication of music generated by artificial intelligence, confirming this decision through new rules announced on the platform’s official blog titled “Keeping Bandcamp Human.” With this move, one of the most important platforms for independent musicians has made it clear that it aims to protect authentic artistic creation and preserve the trust of its community. According to the new guidelines, all music and audio content created entirely or to a significant extent using generative artificial intelligence is no longer allowed on Bandcamp. It is especially emphasized that AI-assisted imitations or impersonations of existing artists are strictly prohibited, without exception. Bandcamp states that the main goal of this decision is to protect independent artists, as well as users who come to the platform trusting that the music they discover is the result of human creativity, emotion, and personal expression. The new rules allow users to report c...

Bandcamp Donates 100% of Profits to Help Artists Affected by California Wildfires

The music community, like many others, has been deeply affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California. Thousands of people, including many artists, have lost their homes and livelihoods. Believing in the power of music to bring change, Bandcamp has announced that on February 7th, all profits from their platform will be donated to MusiCares , a nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial aid, mental health support, and essential healthcare services to artists in need. This humanitarian effort is supported by A2IM, Harman, Lagunitas, Roland, Shure, Victrola, and WIN —all key players in the independent music industry who want to help artists recover and keep creating. In difficult times, every contribution matters. Music is more than just art—it can be a tool to help those in need. Bandcamp Fridays will be running until May 2021

On the first Friday of every month since March, Bandcamp waived their revenue share to help artists who have been impacted by the pandemic.  They announced that this scheme would be extended until May 2021.  They also revealed that so far the initiative has put over $40 million in the hands of independent artists and labels. The ensuing popularity of the initiative resulted in the platform expanding Bandcamp Fridays throughout the entirety of 2020, allowing for fans to direct assist their favourite artists across the year by cutting out the middle man and making sure they receive all the profits. Bandcamp have also reminded users that their platform is still one of the most beneficial ways to support an artist with digital sales, stating that an average of 82% reaches the artist/label with each purchase. Compared to the pay rates of everyone else out there, we reckon that’s a pretty fair flex to make. [ source ]
