Bandcamp Fridays: A Vital Moment for Independent Music — And for Kosovo’s Scene

Since its inception in 2020, Bandcamp Fridays has become one of the most significant annual traditions in the independent music world. What began as a response to global lockdowns has evolved into a powerful mechanism that gives music creators agency over their work and income — and in 2026 the initiative is expanding, offering eight fee-free days for artists and labels around the world. On each Bandcamp Friday — including the dates scheduled for February 6, March 6, May 1, August 7, September 4, October 2, November 6, and December 4, 2026 — Bandcamp waives all revenue share typically taken on sales. That means 100 % of the sale price goes directly to the artist or label, a rare exception in an industry where streaming royalties often fall far short of sustainable earnings. Bandcamp Fridays will be running until May 2021

On the first Friday of every month since March, Bandcamp waived their revenue share to help artists who have been impacted by the pandemic.  They announced that this scheme would be extended until May 2021.  They also revealed that so far the initiative has put over $40 million in the hands of independent artists and labels. The ensuing popularity of the initiative resulted in the platform expanding Bandcamp Fridays throughout the entirety of 2020, allowing for fans to direct assist their favourite artists across the year by cutting out the middle man and making sure they receive all the profits. Bandcamp have also reminded users that their platform is still one of the most beneficial ways to support an artist with digital sales, stating that an average of 82% reaches the artist/label with each purchase. Compared to the pay rates of everyone else out there, we reckon that’s a pretty fair flex to make. [ source ]
