Bandcamp has officially banned the publication of music generated by artificial intelligence, confirming this decision through new rules announced on the platform’s official blog titled “Keeping Bandcamp Human.” With this move, one of the most important platforms for independent musicians has made it clear that it aims to protect authentic artistic creation and preserve the trust of its community.
According to the new guidelines, all music and audio content created entirely or to a significant extent using generative artificial intelligence is no longer allowed on Bandcamp. It is especially emphasized that AI-assisted imitations or impersonations of existing artists are strictly prohibited, without exception.
Bandcamp states that the main goal of this decision is to protect independent artists, as well as users who come to the platform trusting that the music they discover is the result of human creativity, emotion, and personal expression. The new rules allow users to report content they suspect has been generated by AI, while the platform reserves the right to remove such material. However, Bandcamp has not provided a precise definition of what constitutes the use of AI “to a significant extent,” leaving room for further interpretation and policy development.
This decision comes at a time when more and more musicians are distancing themselves from mainstream streaming platforms, citing poor treatment of artists and low payouts. As a result, many are turning to alternative distribution channels, with Bandcamp standing out as a key option, especially for the independent and electronic music scenes. In the region, one notable example is producer Egoless, who recently announced that his future releases will be available exclusively on Bandcamp and YouTube.
Bandcamp emphasizes that the new policy is driven by the immense amount of human creativity, dedication, and passion that artists bring to the platform every day. They also state that any future changes to the rules will be communicated transparently, in line with the development of AI technologies and their impact on the music industry.
With this move, Bandcamp positions itself among the few major music platforms that have taken a clear and principled stand against the use of generative artificial intelligence in music distribution, sending a strong message in support of authentic, human-driven creativity — the very foundation on which the independent music scene is built.
