On our portal, Kosovo Clubbing, we strive to stay updated with the latest news from the world of electronic music. Today, we bring you an intriguing glimpse into the history of DJing, inspired by a text from Skilz DJ Academy.

Who were the first DJs, and how did they lay the foundations for the culture we adore today?

Francis Grasso
The Beginnings of DJing

DJing began in the 1920s, during the rise of radio popularity. Back then, music enthusiasts experimented with records, creating smooth transitions between songs to offer audiences a completely new experience.

Pioneers of DJing

  • Francis Grasso: In the late 1960s, Grasso revolutionized DJing in New York by using two turntables to transition between songs. His "beat-matching" technique became the standard in the DJ world.

  • Kool Herc: This legendary DJ from the Bronx is known as the father of hip-hop. In the 1970s, Herc developed the "breakbeat" technique, which inspired an entire generation of musicians and dance culture.

  • Wendy Hunt and Annie Nightingale: Wendy Hunt was a pioneer of the disco scene, while Annie Nightingale became the first female DJ on BBC Radio 1. Their work opened doors for women in a male-dominated industry.
