Study of electronic music: 20% live from the industry; 35% earn part-time; 45% have no income

In its comprehensive survey of the electronic music industry, the International Music Summit presented interesting statistics and results

Among the numerous creators, DJs, producers and other actors of the electronic scene, only 20% of them can make a living from the industry. 35% of them earn part-time from electronic music, while 45% of actors have no income from the industry.

One thing that connects them all is that electronic music is not just a hobby for them, but a real passion from which they want to create a career and earn money. Investigating the statistics in more detail, IMS discovered that the average earnings of creators in electronic music is slightly less than 9,500 US dollars annually, while in some other music industries it amounts to several thousand dollars more.

Almost 47% of that income comes from streaming platforms, and 34% of respondents revealed that they had an increase in income compared to last year.

As for the problems and challenges that musicians in electronic music most often encounter, they are: - lack of education and "know-how" - unsuccessful use of social networks and streaming platforms - insufficient financial resources - not enough time to create music - lack of opportunities to present your work.

Check out the "Business Keeps On Dancing" panel held at Ambasador last year, where they discussed the business side of music, that is, how to build a business out of passion for music and how to manage to maintain it. Ivan Bušljeta (Papaya club), Ana Veliki (Blender), Mersel Bujak (Klabika), Tomo In Der Muhlen (Steel) and Adnan Mehmedović (Fresh Island festival) participated as moderators and told us about their beginnings, finances and the situation in the industry today.
