The first lady of Detroit techno - K-Hand - has passed away
K-HAND, the legendary Detroit dj and producer, has reportedly died. News of Kelli Hand's passing broke on social media on Tuesday night, with several dance music figures stating that individuals close to the Detroit artist confirmed her death. The cause of death is currently unknown.
K-Hand was officially recognized in 2017 as ‘The First Lady of Detroit’ when she was presented with the city’s Testimonial Resolution certificate, which applauded her “skills within a male-dominated industry.”
A pivotal figure across Detroit’s house and techno scenes, Hand developed her love of music from a young age, later going on to study music theory at college in New York, and becoming a regular at NYC’s legendary club Paradise Garage.
Hand went on to set up her own label in 1990 — originally called UK House Records, which she later renamed to Acacia Records after a street in Detroit.
She had a blast of performance at the Belgian Boiler Room, then at the Moondance Festival in Croatia, and at the Lovefest in Serbia.
With fervent passion and drive, Hand had started forging her highly regarded and respected path, and was professionally and publicly acknowledged as the very first woman to ever release electronic music in the world.”
