No dancing, just listening: Berlin techno club Berghain reopens doors

Coronavirus is keeping Berlin's techno clubs closed but Berghain has found a way to throw its doors back open, luring visitors with an unusual sound exhibition.  Visitors listen to the sound installation 'eleven songs – halle am berghain' at Berghain club in Berlin on July 24, 2020. (AFP/Stefanie Loos) Just 50 people are let in at a time to allow for physical distancing, but without the venue's notoriously picky doormen standing guard, no one has to worry about being denied entry.  The sound of techno will not fill the space during this first installation. Instead, visitors to the former power plant are enveloped by an eery, almost surreal soundscape of rhythmic throbbing, soft city noises, murmurings and even the whirling of helicopter blades.  "You listen, you experience, you can close your eyes or leave them open and follow the sound across the room," said Carsten Seiffarth, co-curator of the Singuhr projects, a platform that organises sound art install

Berlin boat demo turns into rave

More than a thousand people took part in a rubber dinghy demo in Berlin  to support the city’s struggling club culture, an event which quickly turned into a party . Around 1,500 people ( police estimates) gathered at Berlin’s Landwehr Canal, lining the banks and filling the body of water with yachts, canoes and small inflatable boats.  People cramped into the packed canal partying with music , but not many face masks at all. The event was organised by club collective Rebellion der Träumer to support Berlin’s hard hit nightclubs, who have been unable to open their doors since the Covid-19 health crisis began. The group, which said the demonstration was organised with an alliance of different initiatives and clubs, said it had chosen to host the event on water "in order to minimize the risk of infection as much as possible". "Berlin misses its diverse club scene. Clubs and bars are suffering economically during the corona crisis. That's why, in addition to providing immediate aid, we want to create legal opportunities to party in public areas for the clubs and Berliners," she said.  All clubs had to close their doors at the beginning of the epidemic on March 14th. There is still no news on when they will be allowed to fully reopen but some have started to offer small outdoor parties. [ source ]
